Old Time music has historically been associated with the Appalachian region even though many practitioners live beyond the borders of Appalachia. While once thought to be simply a product of the Appalachian region, Old Time music is now recognized as a traditional North American art form and an important part of the cultural history of our country.
Abstract: Appalachian Old Time fiddling has migrated to different areas of the world, changing in some ways but remaining true to the source in other aspects. This presentation will focus on Old Time fiddling in Florida. Learning styles, teaching methods and performance practice in current times will be compared to what we know of past transmissions in order to highlight the way Old Time fiddling has continued to thrive in Florida. Portions of video interviews with prominent Old Time musicians from Florida will be shared.
